Unveiling the Mystic Black Cube: A Masterpiece by Patrick Buchecker

Exploring the Impact of Light on High Pressure Laminate Surfaces

Patrick Buchecker, a renowned designer, has created an exhibition booth that stands out for its unique interpretation of light's impact on high pressure laminate surfaces. This article delves into the inspiration, unique properties, and realization technology of the Mystic Black Cube, an award-winning design that was showcased at the Swissbau 2016.

The Mystic Black Cube, an exhibition stand for Argolite AG, a manufacturer of high pressure laminates, was designed with the intention to pique the curiosity of visitors. The stand, covering a space of 220m2, was a black, semi-transparent cube that allowed just enough insight to attract visitors to enter and explore. The entrance, created in a vibrant, high gloss red HPL, reflected sounds due to its hard surfaces, providing a stark contrast to the peaceful, sound-absorbing environment inside the cube.

Buchecker's inspiration for this design came from the theme of illustrating the impact of light - its intensity, temperature, and angle - on high pressure laminate surfaces. To control the light within, a dark environment was necessary, hence the creation of the mystic black cube. The design also featured two showrooms on the left and right side of the entrance alley, treated in black using soft materials like textiles and rubber flooring.

The unique properties of the Mystic Black Cube lie in its ability to generate a memorable experience for its visitors. The entrance portal, very low and wide, narrows towards the end, while the ceiling climbs to 4 meters, creating an intriguing spatial experience. The use of high gloss red HPL for the entrance portal adds to the mystique and allure of the design.

The realization of this design involved the use of HPL materials, rubber flooring, and semi-transparent fabric. View-master gadgets were also used to view projects and material properties. The booth, measuring 18 x12 x 4 m, was in operation for 6 days at the Swiss building trade fair, Swissbau 2016.

The Mystic Black Cube has been recognized for its innovative design and has been awarded the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The design, admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

In conclusion, Patrick Buchecker's Mystic Black Cube stands as a testament to innovative design that effectively illustrates the impact of light on high pressure laminate surfaces. Its unique properties and memorable spatial experience make it a standout design in the realm of exhibition booths. The design's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award further underscores its excellence and innovation.
